Dr. Mark David Milliron President of National University
A Message From President Mark D. Milliron
It’s my incredible honor to serve as National University’s sixth president. This institution has a rich history as an access-and-success innovator committed to serving striving students. We’re dedicated to continuing that good work even as we shape the future of next-generation education nationwide.
Every day, we work to open new pathways to possibility for hard-working students. We meet them where they are in their lives with quality education experiences and holistic support. Our goal is to open doors, remove barriers, and help those willing to put in the work get on their way to credentials that power their professional and personal lives. NU students represent diverse backgrounds and come from all different walks of life — whether they’re working professionals or serving their country or communities.
The part that NU plays in accomplishing this important mission started 50 years ago with a focus on educating active-duty military and Veterans seeking to transition to the nonmilitary workforce. We expanded to include hard-working adults seeking to change their lives through educational opportunities. Today, education is game-changing, and we’re committed to serving our extremely diverse population of learners who are determined to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and make a difference.
This work matters. Indeed, our 230,000-strong alumni are leading better lives and creating lifelong opportunities for their families. Their contributions have created a much-improved society. Thousands of students follow in their footsteps every year, and it’s our duty as a university community to come together and work every day to empower these strivers in the pursuit of their dreams.
I look forward to working with all our students and stakeholders to help National University continue making a difference in the months and years to come!
Areas of Focus
President Milliron is dedicated to continuing National University’s history as an access and success innovator in higher education. Areas of particular focus include:
Whole Human Education™
National University’s whole-human approach helps students overcome barriers to education and achieve success with an innovative, 360-degree ecosystem built on five critical pillars of support: Financial, Academic, Social and Emotional, Family Life and Community, and Career. NU students get the help they need to stay on track, finish faster, and achieve their personal and professional goals.
Next-Generation Learning
To add value to students today and well into the future, National University is pushing the boundaries of learning in a thoughtful, effective, and inclusive way. The intersection of education, deeper learning, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), and technology are visible in two key areas: our standing as the largest conferrer of graduate degrees to diverse students in the US — with over 50% women — and the No. 2 conferrer of doctoral degrees overall; and our embracement of virtual reality training initiatives to provide hands-on experiences in simulated environments.
Credential-Rich Pathways
National University creates deeper connections and meaningful outcomes for adult learners through credential-rich pathways. These pathways provide “on-ramps” for students — whether through community college, military, or employer partnerships — to help them continue their educational journey from stackable badges and programs to associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs.
“Adapt and Accommodate: How to Ensure Higher Ed Is Accessible.” President Milliron joined Modern Campus’ Podcast to discuss the numerous ways National University is championing the accessibility initiative — one of these being the NU “Whole Human Education™” campaign, which is based on creating an education model that addresses the unique needs of a diverse student population.
