National University Supports U.S. Marine Maggie Seymour’s Run across America to Raise Awareness for Education and Military-Affiliated Causes and Communities

U.S. Marine Corps Captain Maggie Seymour kicks off 100-day, coast-to-coast run in San Diego on July 22, with the support of Title Sponsor National University

San Diego, Calif. – National University, which is among the largest private nonprofit universities in California, is proud to support U.S. Marine Corps Captain Maggie Seymour in her run across the United States. Seymour, who will be transitioning from active duty to reserve status this summer, founded the nonprofit organization Run Free Run to raise awareness of and support for a variety of notable military-affiliated causes and communities. National University, which has a strong tradition of serving the military community is hosting the Run Free Run kickoff event Saturday, July 22 at 8:30 a.m. at the Women’s Museum of CA, Liberty Station, 2730 Historic Decatur Rd, Suite 103.

National University, which was named a “Model of Excellence” in 2016 by University Business magazine for its academic services for Veteran and military students, has been a leader in providing support to students transitioning to civilian life. In addition, the National University Veteran Center provides services in areas such as transitioning to campus life, as well as academic and career advisement.

“With a significant number of military Veterans transitioning to civilian status, National University is proud to support Maggie Seymour and Run Free Run,” said Dr. David Andrews, president of National University. “We applaud the contributions of our military community and like Maggie, we believe in the power of education to inspire and strengthen communities.”

Seymour, who one year ago celebrated her 30th birthday by running 30 miles through Kuwait, will begin her run across the country on July 22 in San Diego, CA and end on October 28 in Virginia Beach, VA. During ten years of active duty service, Seymour was inspired by several communities throughout her military career, such as the academic community and National University. At the completion of the run, Seymour, who is nearing the end of a doctoral program, will teach a course as a professor at National University.

“I am thrilled to be teaching at National University because it is a Veteran-founded nonprofit university that serves adult learners,” said Seymour. “Education, like running, is a journey. The more you learn, the more you understand about the world and people around you, and the more you can achieve.”

National University was founded in 1971 by Dr. David Chigos, himself a Navy retiree, with the mission to serve the education needs of working adults and the military community. Today, approximately 25 percent of National University students are members of the military or Veteran community, and working students of all backgrounds benefit from the University’s approaches toward providing a quality, accessible education.

Seymour persevered through setbacks in her journey to becoming a Marine, and hopes to inspire others to connect and give back to Veteran and local communities during her cross-country run. In February of 2016, Seymour ran 161 miles over four days along the coast of California to honor the 161 United States servicewomen who died supporting operations since 9/11.
