Contrastive Analysis: Sp & Eng

Course Description

Examines and applies the linguistic and cultural structures and functions of Spanish and English, and provides a contrastive analysis and comparison of the two languages. Candidates will analyze the evolution of Spanish and English, as well as language variations and levels of language.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which Spanish phrases, clauses and sentences are formed, including syntax and word order. (CSET/LOTE 1.2 D)
  • Analyze and contrast words, idioms, and inflections of the target language and English. (CSET/LOTE 1.2, A )
  • Demonstrate an understanding of English, including sound systems (phonology) and the rules by which words are formed. (CSET/LOTE 2.3 B)
  • Describe and distinguish English rhetorical and stylistic devices, pragmatics, figures of speech, and the levels of language appropriate for various tasks and communicative purposes. (CSET/LOTE 2.3)
  • Trace and analyze language variation and historical changes in English including differences in pronunciation, orthography, vocabulary, and grammatical structures, as well as register. (CSET/LOTE 2.3 B)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Spanish, including sound systems (phonology) and the rules by which words are formed. (CSET/LOTE 1.2, A)
  • Describe and distinguish Spanish rhetorical and stylistic devices, pragmatics, figures of speech, and the levels of language appropriate for various tasks and communicative purposes. (CSET/LOTE 1.2 A)
  • Trace and analyze language variation and historical changes in Spanish including dialectical differences in pronunciation, orthography, vocabulary, and grammatical structures, as well as register, and the factors that account for these differences. (CSET/LOTE 1.2 B C)
  • Analyze and contrast linguistic structures of the target language and English. (CSET/LOTE 1.2 B)
