Dev. Fluency in Reading Course

Course Description

Research-based analysis of English phonology, morphology and orthography, with attention to teaching students to become proficient readers through recognizing sound-print relationships. Incorporates current approaches to phonemic awareness, explicit phonics instruction, recognition of high-frequency words and spelling patterns for both English speakers and English language learners.

Learning Outcomes

  • Design a Curriculum Project based on the knowledge of the theoretical and research foundations of reading fluency.
  • Design effective instructional practices for teaching fluency to the developing reader, the struggling reader, and all types of special needs reader.
  • Select effective instructional strategies for teaching fluency to individuals, small and large groups, and in whole class instruction.
  • Create research-based curriculum materials for teaching fluency to all learners including native English speakers, limited English proficient speakers, English language learners and struggling readers.
