Course Description
This course offers a heightened awareness of working with other professionals and parents of special needs students. It is designed to insure that each candidate will recognize his/her role in the understanding and practice of the professional, legal, and ethical practices for instructing students with disabilities.
Learning Outcomes
- Integrate and apply knowledge of the legal bases and mandates of special education, including the protections and rights afforded by federal law, practices expected of teachers, (e.g. fair assessment practices, development of IEP’s and IFSP’s, monitoring and instruction, etc.). INTASC#9
- Integrate and apply knowledge of the ethical standards and professional practices of education and special education, including the ability to provide a safe environment. INTASC#9
- Integrate and apply necessary skills for collaboration. INTASC#9
- Integrate and apply knowledge of special education legal requirements for the IFSP/IEP and related to education (IEP, 504, job partnership, IDEA, etc.) INTASC #7 and 9
- Integrate and apply knowledge of state and federal legal requirements for placement and instruction of English Learners including ASL/English Learners. INTASC#2
- Integrate and apply knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the promoting of positive behavior and self regulation as well as to promoting safe schools INTASC#2 and 9
