Theory in Advanced Practice

Course Description

This course develops critical thinking skills to support advancement of nursing knowledge through theory development, analysis, and application of advanced nursing practice in diverse settings. Students explore the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of nursing practice and develop skill in analysis of nursing and related theories.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze the philosophical and theoretical foundations of advanced nursing practice including the influence of major philosophical schools of thought on nursing theory development and advanced nursing roles.
  • Analyze the structural hierarchy of conceptual models and grand theories of nursing used in advanced practice.
  • Evaluate the interrelationship of philosophy, levels of nursing theory, research, and advanced nursing practice.
  • Describe the evolution of theory from conceptual definitions, through development of operational definitions, to integration of evidence into new theory.
