Capstone Course I

Course Description

Focus on the application of application of engineering processes learned through this program. Working in teams or as individuals under the guidance of their assigned faculty advisor, students select a research topic, and gather data. The duration of this course is one month. This is the first part of two course series that each student has to complete sequentially. Grading is H, S, or U only.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Project Management Concentration:

  • Evaluate critically a given project for its success and/or failure based on concepts learned.
  • Write a Masters level research project/thesis based on the findings that include all essential elements of a good project management engineering system.
  • Define a specific research problem and/or a business study closely related to project management engineering or safety/security engineering or industrial engineering
  • Show a comprehensive literature review relating to the study and methods used in the project
  • Identify sources of data for the project analysis and gather and analyze relevant data
  • Show timelines and key milestones for execution and completion of project activities
  • Identify, describe and use appropriate quantitative and analytical models for drawing conclusions
  • Defend the project findings during oral presentation to faculty, class and, if applicable, to clients.

Safety/Security Engineering Concentration:

  • Evaluate critically safety and security system of a building, and/or a system.
  • Write a Masters level research project/thesis based on the findings that include all essential elements of a good safety and security engineering system.
  • Define a specific research problem and/or an industrial / commercial case study
  • Show a comprehensive literature review relating to the study and methods used in the project
  • Identify sources of data for the analysis and gather and analyze relevant data
  • Identify, describe and use appropriate quantitative and analytical models for drawing conclusions
  • Defend the project findings during oral presentation to faculty, class and, if applicable, to clients.

Industrial Engineering Concentration:

  • Evaluate critically an industrial engineering project/process for its success and/or failure based on concepts learned.
  • Write a Masters level research project/thesis based on the findings that include all essential elements industrial engineering management system.
  • Define a specific research problem and/or a business study closely related to Industrial engineering management
  • Show a comprehensive literature review relating to the study and methods used in the project
  • Identify sources of data for the project analysis and gather and analyze relevant data
  • Identify, describe and use appropriate quantitative and analytical models for drawing conclusions
  • Defend the project findings during oral presentation to faculty, class and, if applicable, to clients.

Requirements

ENM 607 A has to be completed followed by ENM 607B. In the event, a student fails to complete ENM 607B successfully, then the student must once again retake ENM 607A.
