Community Leadership

Course Description

Explores community leadership, outreach and partnerships through the lens of diversity and pluralism (of students, school personnel,the community, and society). Cultural competence is essential in working with diversity in present-day school environments. The course examines nonprofit models and community organizing that succeeds in supporting and enhancing schools and their surrounding communities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze how people make important distinctions and judgments about their own and others’ backgrounds, points of view and cultures.
  • Apply the concept of multiple identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, political ideology, social class) to various contexts including the workplace, private and public organizations, and throughout the global society.
  • Appraise the role of community organizations (for-profit, non-profit, and governmental) in the community from the perspectives of various constituents.
  • Argue ways in which narrow definitions of diversity can perpetuate stereotypes and discrimination within and across communities.
