Legal and Ethical Practices

Course Description

Provides an introduction to professional, ethical, legal , theoretical, and practical aspects of counseling. Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of counselors, professional organizations, and associations. Historical and social context along with emerging professional issues and directions are included. National Standards and ethical guidelines fro practice are examined.

Learning Outcomes

  • Articulate and apply the implications of laws and court cases pertaining to diverse pupils in school settings.
  • Apply the Education Code and compliance procedures relating to pupil personnel services.
  • Identify, understand, and demonstrate respect of the professional responsibilities, limitations, trends, and issues faced by school counselors.
  • Articulate and apply the implications of professional ethics relating to counseling including the application of the code of ethics of the American School Counseling Association and the American Counseling Association.
