Course Description

The study of determinants and distribution of disease and disability in human populations. Empirical analysis of population data related to morbidity and mortality. Investigation of disease outbreaks, risk factors, health outcomes and causal relationships. Critical evaluation of public health literature and study design.

Learning Outcomes

• Calculate crude, specific and adjusted mortality and morbidity rates in populations.
• Apply methods of Biostatistics to analyze variance among population mortality and morbidity rates.
• Evaluate relationships between risk factors and health outcomes.
• Interpret causal inference.
• Calculate sensitivity and specificity of screening tools.
• Identify specific study designs applicable to public health issues.
• Critically evaluate public health literature for soundness of study design, and validity of conclusions.
